Getting There
By air: Flights to Amsterdam arrive in Schipol Airport which is approximately 18 kilometres southwest of the city centre. Trains leave the airport for Centraal Station every 20 minutes and take 20 minutes. The journey costs €3.10. A taxi ride to town takes approx 15 minutes and will cost you approx €30, depending on which part of town you are going to.
Some budget airlines are beginning to fly to Rotterdam Airport which is approximately one hour from Amsterdam via bus.
By train: Domestic and international trains going to Amsterdam arrive in Centraal Station which is in the heart of Amsterdam’s city centre.
By bus: Buses arriving and departing from Amsterdam do so from Amstel Station which is connected to Centraal Station by metro. Buses leaving for London, Brussels, and Amsterdam’s other cities depart from here.
Getting Around
On foot: Central Amsterdam is easy to get around, but a lot of what there is to see, apart from Dam Square and the Red Light District, are a short tram/bike ride away.
By bike: The bike is the best way to see Amsterdam. There are over 500,000 of them in the city. You can hire one for about €7 per day. The most important thing to remember is to lock your bike - bike theft is a huge problem.
By tram: The most popular mode of public transport in the Dutch capital is the tram. There are 15 different lines and they are the backbone of the city’s public transport network. You can purchase your tram tickets before boarding and the best value is a Strip Ticket (Strippen-kaart) at €6 for 15 trips. If there is a conductor on the tram, they will stamp your ticket. Otherwise you will need to validate your ticket in the machines provided. Once it is validated you can ride on the tram or bus for an hour. Strippen-kaarts can be bought at the tram office in front of Centraal Station, and some news-stands. The best tram for tourists is No. 20 which stops close to most of the tourist attractions.
By bus/metro: There are two metro stations in the city centre at Nieuwmarkt and Waterlooplein, while bus stops aren’t as sparse.
