3 days in Amsterdam

Known as the ‘Venice of the North’, Amsterdam is a city built on a cobweb of canals that boasts one of the most picturesque settings in the world. True, it is a city full of hazy coffee shops where stoners smoke all day and where prostitutes standing in red-lit windows try to lure in prospective customers, but there is much more to the Dutch capital than hookers and hash. It boasts world-class museums, great architecture and a buzzing nightlife making it the perfect city for a few days break.

Day 1 - Amsterdam

A canal tour to remember

Begin your trip in Amsterdam with a canal boat tour. They are the best way to see the city and leave from the Damrak, the street facing you as you leave Centraal Station. Afterwards take a stroll down Damrak until you get Dam Square, one of Amsterdam’s best-known squares. This is where you will also find the Royal Palace. Grab lunch in Ah to Go, a sandwich shop at the Dam Square end of Damrak.

In the afternoon go to the Anne Frank House, one of the city’s most popular museums. Just as moving as it is fascinating, a visit is a memorable and moving experience. Stay in this area, known as the Jordaan, for something to eat before finishing the night off in Werck, a bar just doors up from the Anne Frank House and one of the Dutch capital’s coolest bars.

Day 2 - Amsterdam

Chill out in Vondelpark

Take the trip down to Leidseplein, the other of the city’s best-known squares. As tacky, brash and touristy as it is, it is still worth the visit, if only for the street entertainment. Afterwards chill out in Vondelpark for a few hours and get your lunch in ’t Blauwe Theehuis.

Dedicate the afternoon to the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam largest museum. Under major renovations at the moment, it still shouldn’t be missed. Here you will find some of Rembrandt’s finest works.

One of Amsterdam’s coolest areas is known as De Pijp which translates to ‘the pipe’. Off the beaten track, here you will find the bars the locals like to drink in.

Day 3 - Amsterdam

On your bike!

Rent out a bike for the day and see the Dutch capital on its most popular mode of transport. Cycle along the Jordaan’s charming canals before making your way over to the Pijp. If you’re looking to pick up something for yourself, visit the Albert Cuypmarkt market. If you don’t buy anything for yourself you can at least feast from the various stalls.

In the afternoon visit the third of Amsterdam’s best-known museums – the Van Gogh Museum. Documenting the life and times of the Dutchman, it gives a fascinating insight into the prolific artist’s life.

No trip to Amsterdam is complete without visiting its infamous Red Light District. You may not want to spend the night here, but you should definitely grace it with your presence at some stage.
